take my whole life, too

Dead Moon - Can't Help Falling In Love

Denim jacket: flea market find
Dress: Ermine Vtg.
Tights: Gap
Boots: Goodwill

My younger sister took these over the holiday break while in Maryland (hellooo sweater weather).
After seventeen years I've adapted to the heat and wild-card weather of Texas, thanks in part to the plethura of swimming areas in the city. Still, a winter that doesn't really feel like winter gets old and I find myself happy to escape to means of a chiller climate, even if for a mere week. Come winter break I'll be sad to miss friends dropping into Austin for the holidays, but I'm excited to visit family in Portland and have already began mentally packing for the occasion :)

Some things:

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Morgan about interviewing musicians and stuff. You can find the interview on her lovely blog here.

✩  If you're a teen girl living in the ATX area, there is an opportunity to take part in an amazing project by photographer and filmmaker Jennifer Cox! Find out more here.

If you love Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining and have given as little thought to the symbolism featured in the film as I, you will absolutely eat up this analysis.

screen caps from Tanner Hall (2009)

This movie was such an aesthetic treat. I suppose it would be difficult to make the New England location in which it was filmed anything but majestic looking. In addition to the beautiful scenery, the clothing which the girls wore (a wardrobe straight out of Anthropologie) and decor of their rooms were also exquisite. This was the first time I'd seen Rooney Mara in, and I must say she put on a great performance.

Interview with Alaina Moore from Tennis

Patrick and Alanna performing at ACL 2012

Over the past weekend during ACL, I was able to interview the lovely Alaina, singer of husband and wife duo Tennis.
Ever since I first heard Marathon blaring from shop speakers, I have been in love with Tennis's beachy-sweet sound, heavy with dreamy pop melodies reminiscent of the 50's. It was beyond wonderful to meet Patrick and singer-keyboardist Alaina, who was gracious enough to speak with me for Youth Spin between interviews and prepping for the band's ACL set.

So you’re here at ACL. How does it feel?
I love it I’m excited to be here, any excuse to be in Austin is a good one.

Where are you from?

My band and I are based out of Denver.

When did you form?

We started playing about two years ago, we were in the whole myspace sound and dance, back in the glory days of myspace, when we released a song that way and somehow become a band out of that one demo online, so.

You’re songs have are very summery kind of, does that have anything to do with the name Tennis?

No actually, the name Tennis is totally trivial and irrelevant to everything, but… our first inspiration to write music was based on an experience that was spent living on a sailboat for a long period of time in which it was very summery and that was kind of the vibe and aesthetic, we were listening to a lot of Beach Boys and girl groups and Paul Simon and things of that nature, I was kind of rediscovering my love for that kind of music and that’s kind of what ended up shaping our sound later down the road.

If you had to describe your latest release as a parson, what kind of person would they be?

Moody, and … maybe multiple personality disorder. Actually for the lyrics in our latest album Young And Old, I was kind of thinking of a woman changing over time from youth to old age and I was thinking about how her perspective would change kind of the emotional ramifications and the maturity you would gain in that. So yeah, that’s how would describe it.

And lastly, what’s your favorite sandwich?

You know what? Of all time, peanut butter and jelly. It’s just too good... yeah.

fall vibez

(source)
I absolutely adore Abbey Karson's simple 60's style, her blog has given me a ton of fall inspiration.

Just add a leather jacket, rosary and dark red lipstick to perfect the image!
Linda Darnell
Really want to master the chic scarf.

Katherine Ross as Eileen in The Graduate.
If you have not seen this please do. In addition to being an absolutely fantastic watch, the colors and Simon and Garfunkle soundtrack make for a perfect fall watch.

Loving the Twin Peaks vibes of lovely French brand L'ecole des Femmes.

back 2 skool insp - Sherilyn Fenn in "Just One Of The Guys"

Last night I watched One of the Guys (1989), which I had been stupidly skeptical about seeing but, despite the incorrect use of the term "transgender", am so glad I did.  I love 2006's She's The Man* (which I can credit the foundation of most of my inside-jokes to), but One Of The Guys delivered not only hilarity* and plot but also adorable edge-of-the-80's style. Which brings me to my next subject:

Sherilyn Fenn has been my #1 actress crush since I first saw her as Audrey Horne in Twin Peaks, and I was pleasantly surprised to see her make an appearance in this!

Her character Sandy's style is kind of a cuter and more put-together Madonna (circa Desperately Seeking Susan) look. Definitely edgy but still retaining that school-girl charm.

Hair/head accessorizing inspiration!

this uh-mazing prom dress.

*I feel like Hilarity is such a cheesy word so I apologize for using it *Also I assimilate the two movies only because I feel that She's The Man borrowed a lot from One of the Guys. One might go so far as to call it a re-make.

can we just take a moment to appreciate Melanie Laurent in Inglorious Basterds

or really, Melanie Laurent in everything. The sole entity that is Melanie Laurent.

I had seen Inglorious Basterds the year it came out in theaters, but revisited the Tarantino gem last Sunday morning. The rainy day called for anti-facism violence and Neil from Freaks and Geeks in one on-screen experience.

I enjoy everything about this movie. Melanie's make up montage still takes the cake.

Rookie Meet-Up

Last Saturday I co-hosted the ATX Rookie Meet-up with Illyana and Mirielle at the wonderful Domy Books space!

Taken by Savannah
There was sillyness, candy and collage making. The girls and I pooled our magazine collections together and everyone went to town on them, pasting cut-outs onto notebooks or simply pieces of construction paper. I didn't take any of my own photographs, but here are some courtesy of Paper Party, which is a darling paper goods store within the Domy building:

Prepping the craft tools with Mirielle

Also in the space is Olive Vintage, run by the lovely Laura, who was able to supply me with a pair of perfect woven ankle boots (more on those later) when the strap on my wedge shoe snapped off!
Everyone at the Domy space was so gracious and charming. I think I've found my new favorite store there, which is filled with an assortment of curios, comics, handmade beauties and a rad selection of books. It was so incredibly generous of them to host the meet up, especially considering it was there first day officially open for business!

For more photos you can visit the blog of the immensely talented Corbin, An Urban Experience, or Olive Vintage.

forever boycotting Terry Richardson

I would be doing a disservice to myself without expressing my revolt for Nasty Gal hiring Terry Richardson to shoot their Fall 2012 collection.  It's not that I have a problem with Nasty Gal; in fact, I like the confetti and festival-grunge affair going on.
It's knowing that Terry Richardson directed and shot the collection with his voyeurism-promoting mindset and history of sexual harassment that really soils the whole thing for me.
It's difficult to completely explain why the actions of one man who is only partially involved with the brand should turn me off from Nasty Gal.  Many would query why it is that the background of someone should have any relation to their professional life.  The fact is that Richardson's first publicly acknowledged act of sexual molestation was with a model he was working with, therefore it is in direct relation to his work (not that it should matter a great deal more than if it was non-work related).  I find it disappointing and obscene that not only has such a case been so easily dismissed in the industry of fashion publishing and photography; Richardson has been praised and all but placed on a pedestal for his photography with nearly zero regard to his history of sexual advances with young models.
To sum it up, I feel like the fact that Terry Richardson being hired by major clothing brands like Nasty Gal is a huge insult to women who have faced or are facing sexual harassment, especially by people who have the power to impact their careers.

movie caps

                                                               Starstruck (1982)
Delightful Australian musical.  To this day I am appalled that it doesn't get half as much hype as Taxi Driver.  This movie makes me want to try red hair-- it seems to add something extra to every outfit and looks absolutely fantastic with red lipstick! Also I need to acquire a bone piece and try that Bam-Bam esque hair trick.
Wish I'd gotten a better shot of Jackie's minty waitressing uniform. (Self Note: Need to make a diner-girl uniform appreciation post.) Settled for this shot of her and class-cutting cousin Angus instead: The heartthrob of my 12 year old self!
The room shared by the two cousins is the height of wondrous.

Boys Don't Cry (1999)
Just a few shots of Chloe Sevigny being enchanting.

Some Girl (1998)
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I found it under Juliette Lewis on netflix, and though the description made it sound fluffy and banal, I ended up enjoying a stir fry of unsweetened relationship truisms and emotionally vulnerable characters.

Party Monster (2003)
Movie surrounding Micheal Alig's involvement in the New York party scene and the club kids of the late 1980's and early 1990's.
Seth Green and Macaulay Culkin perfectly illustrate the relationship between Micheal Alig and James St. James.  Though the movie perfectly captured the movement's glittery ecstacy-hooked essence, half the fun was watching these two!
The actors really seemed to have so much fun with their roles. The clothing and makeup choices were, to put it mildly, outrageously brilliant.
The stunning Amanda Lepore makes an appearance!
More of darling Chloe <3

It's Ricky with wings!

While I found some parts difficult to sit through (needles make me squirm), I would definitely consider this a worthwhile watch. Before seeing Party Monster I knew little about the movement, but it drove me to do some research on the Club Kids and I spent a good half hour watching Micheal Alig interviews.

I hope there is something for everyone here! Next post is scary movies methinks. Comment a scary movie and I will either watch or review it!
